Flavours, Stories, and Freshness

Step Inside Calgary’s Roasterie

The first thing hits you isn’t the menu or the cute guy behind the counter.
It’s the smell.
The roaster hums in the corner, the beans crackle as they spin, and the air is rich with deep chocolate, subtle spice, and the promise of a proper cup. This is the kind of aroma that makes you pause, look around, and take a deep breath, a scent that defines Kensington on a quiet morning.

Coffee here is more than a drink.
It’s a craft you can see, smell, and taste. Every batch tells a story, and every cup is an invitation to experience it.

Italian Espresso: Our Original Signature Roast

Let’s start with the Italian Espresso, the coffee that’s been the backbone of the Roasterie since day one.
A dark French roast, it brings dark chocolate notes, hints of cinnamon at the finish, a smooth, balanced body, and an aroma so intense you can smell it across the room.

Dark roast isn’t a dirty word here.
Done right, it’s bold, deep, and layered.
If the coffee tag says “mild acidity,” it means the bright notes finish gently in your mouth, not sharp or harsh, a subtle lift at the end of a sip.

From Jamaican Coffee Farms to Calgary Cups

Most of the times coffees carry stories as rich as their flavour.
One of the most memorable is the Clifton Mt Estate Jamaican coffee.
A week on the farm changes how you see a coffee; the customs, the people, and the amount of care behind it all explain why it’s considered premium. The family has been farming this land for decades, and every detail, from picking to processing, reflects generations of care.

Now, we bring that story to you. When you drink this coffee here or take it home, you’re tasting tradition, craft, and precision, not just beans.
Very few coffee shops can say they know the farmers personally, it’s rare, and it shows.

How to Taste Coffee Like a Roaster

Our menu caters to both explorers and purists. Five different drip coffees, a broad espresso selection, and a variety of iced drinks.

Flavoured Espresso Without Syrups
Want a flavoured latte? No syrups here, our own roasted flavored espresso beans bring the taste: Nutty Vanilla, Highlander Grogg, Hazelnut Cream.
Each one is carefully roasted to hold its unique flavour without hiding the bean.

Try Any Bean Your Way
If you want to try something that isn’t on the menu, pick any coffee from the shelf.
We’ll press it in an AeroPress, letting you taste it as the roaster intended: pure, fresh, and full of character.
Then, feel free to experiment; milk, iced, or straight black.

Flavour Notes Made Simple
Tasting coffee isn’t just about what hits your tongue. At the Roasterie, it’s a full sensory experience.
A cup of our Ethiopian or Colombian beans offers fruity brightness that pops at the finish, while a smooth Italian Espresso rounds the edges with chocolate and spice.

We always ask: what flavours do you like? Fruity, chocolaty, citrusy, caramel?
We have 50 different coffees covering multiple bean varieties, so there’s something for every taste.
And yes, you might discover something entirely new that quickly becomes your favourite.

Freshness You Can Smell and Taste

Freshness isn’t a marketing word for us, it’s reality.
We roast in 5 lb batches, so every cup you taste in the shop or at home is at its peak.

One story that really sticks: a client who runs an adventure company on the Nahani River in the Yukon, orders our beans for his expeditions.
His guests enjoy the best coffee out in the wilderness, floating on boats and frolicking in the remote outdoors.
The beans travel carefully from Calgary to Whitehorse by car, semi, and plane, and when they arrive, they taste exactly as we intended: fresh, vibrant, and full-bodied.
Joel has been ordering from us for decades, trusting that small-batch roasting and proper handling deliver the same experience whether in the city or in the middle of nowhere.

Small Batch Coffee

Our roasting philosophy is simple: attention to detail, and letting the bean speak for itself.
Light, medium, and dark roasts are all done properly, respecting the bean and its origin.

By roasting small, we can experiment with microlots, explore unusual beans, and make sure every batch reflects the maximum flavour potential.
It’s a craft that takes patience, but that patience is exactly what you taste in the cup.

Why You Should Visit the Roasterie

We’ve been part of Calgary for 40 years, and this place isn’t like any other coffee shop.
Shelves lined with grinders, old coffee cans, vintage coffee gear, and a working roaster humming in the corner, it’s basically a coffee museum you can sit in, sip from, and enjoy.

This is a spot for anyone who loves to hang out with amazing people, because our community is the best.
And it’s for anyone who likes to savour life to the fullest, because there’s no time for bad coffee.
Come for the beans, stay for the atmosphere, and taste what small-batch, hands-on roasting really means.
