Kenyan Tasting Flight (4 x 1/2 lb)

We roasted these in small batches here at The Roasterie. They are available in limited amounts. The box includes four 1/2 lb bags and a little info card.

We brought in four new coffees from Kenya that we have never roasted before.
They are small lots from specific washing stations in Kiambu, Nyeri, Thika, and Murang'a.

Kenyan coffees are known for being sweet, clean, and full of fruit flavour. We put these four together in 1/2 lb bags so you can taste them side by side and see how different each region tastes.

The Four Coffees

1. Kenya Thiririka Kiganjo AB (Kiambu County)

Varieties: SL 28, SL 34, Batian, Ruiru 11
Altitude: 1,600 to 1,800 m
Tasting Notes: Limoncello, tamarind, pineapple, concord grape, ripe mango
About this lot: Sourced from the Thiririka cooperative in Kiambu. It is bright, sweet, and full of tropical fruit flavours.

2. Kenya Tekangu Tegu AB (Nyeri County)

Varieties: SL 28, SL 34, Batian, Ruiru 11
Altitude: 1,600 to 1,800 m
Tasting Notes: Cranberry, mango, plum, sundried tomato, juicy
About this lot: From Tegu, one of the oldest wet mills in Nyeri. The red clay soil gives this cup a good balance of sweet and savoury notes.

3. Kenya Thika AA+ (Thika Region)

Varieties: SL 28
Altitude: 1,600 m
Tasting Notes: Orange chocolate, hint of amaretto, full bodied, smooth finish
About this lot: A lot made entirely from SL 28 trees. This one is a bit rounder and heavier, with chocolate and citrus notes.

4. Kenya Kaganda (Murang'a County)

Varieties: SL 28, Ruiru 11
Altitude: 1,800 to 1,900 m
Tasting Notes: Black tea, red currant, floral notes, crisp citrus
About this lot: Grown high up in Murang'a, washed with clean local water and dried on raised beds. It brews a light, clean cup with black tea and citrus character.

The Varieties

SL 28 and SL 34: Heritage varieties from the 1930s. They give Kenyan coffee its famous fruit flavours, sweetness, and acidity.
Ruiru 11 and Batian: Newer varieties created to resist plant diseases. They add good structure and balance when grown alongside SL trees.
